Pieter de Hooch was a XVII-century Dutch painter. He is considered, alongside his contemporary Johannes Vermeer, one of the masters of genre painting. In this work entitled Courtyard of a house in Delft, the cobble stones create an illusion of depth, accentuated by a passage that opens the scene onto the exterior. The canvas is conserved at the National Gallery in London.
