A XIX century English Orientalist painter, from ca.1850 John Lewis lived 10 years in Cairo. He stayed away from the Western community there and adopted the local customs and lifestyle instead. This large painting is one of the few oil works he completed during his stay, as he mostly preferred watercolours. The sitter is thought to be his wife, dressed in an Oriental costume amidst the Bey gardens.
